Chingay

Colours & Fun!

Example of Chingay Parade

Think about it. Have you ever wondered what Chingay means, and where it actually originated from?

Well, Chingay was originally celebrated as a festival to welcome the spring’ during the New Year season in Penang in the 19th century. It was known as the ‘Giant Flags Procession’. By using the word ‘Chingay’, it means ‘the art of costume and masquerade’. During the Chingay festival, there are miniature stages or floats which are decorated with different Chinese styles. Each miniature stage would show and represent an important historical scene, which would enhance the culture and history of the country.

Here's one example of how beautiful the Chingay floats are. With the mesmerising lightings, these Chingay floats are capable of drawing attention from everyone all over the world.

Why is Chingay celebrated in Singapore?

Chingay was celebrated in Singapore in 1973. It was introduced by former Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, as a replacement for a different kind of ‘festive spirit driver’ after the banning of firecrackers, in which two people were killed during the lunar New Year festival held in 1972. After the success of the celebrations of Chingay throughout the years, it was then held stationed at Orchard Road in 1985 as a permanent venue.

Why is Chingay important to Singapore?

Chingay is one way in which the Singaporeans preserve the tradition of the Chinese New Year festival, as well as the unique culture and rich multicultural diversity of in Singapore’s society. Through Chingay, the culture and art talents of Singapore will be showcased, adding an exotic flavour to the whole festival. Furthermore, with the involvement of foreign talents in this festival, international relationships are also built.
