How it all started...
The Mosaic Series, launched since 2003, aims to increase the intensity of the music presentation. By providing these performances, budding musicians are able to learn from these professionals at instrument master-classes. Also, as the music industry progresses, this annual festival is able to provide music fans with the latest updates and performances that are relevant to the current trends.
Mosaic Music Festival was only introduced to Singapore in the year 2005 by Esplanade. The performances are held both indoor and outdoor. The outdoor performances are held so that the people strolling along the Esplanade are able to catch a glimpse of the festival. Each year there are over 100 performances and those held outdoor, are free! They have also introduced a new segment – the 11th Hour, which aims to break the usual routine of people, get them out of their bed just an hour before midnight to enjoy music and experience more. Moreover, it is not just about the music. Esplanade also gives fans the opportunity to get to know more about the artistes and their personalities.
Past Mosaic Highlights!
Past Mosaic performances have always been held at the Esplanade around mid-March. It has showcased jazz quartet The Yellojackets with Mike Stern, British-based The Cinematic Orchestra, New York’s Naturally 7 (a gospel, jazz and soul septet), Christian McBride & Inside Straight, Breakestra, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, and many more. Think about it. Have you ever wondered what Chingay means, and where it actually originated from?
Well, Chingay was originally celebrated as a festival to ‘welcome the spring’ during the New Year season in Penang in the 19th century. It was known as the ‘Giant Flags Procession’. By using the word ‘Chingay’, it means ‘the art of costume and masquerade’. During the Chingay festival, there are miniature stages or floats which are decorated with different Chinese styles. Each miniature stage would show and represent an important historical scene, which would enhance the culture and history of the country.
Here's one example of how beautiful the Chingay floats are. With the mesmerising lightings, these Chingay floats are capable of drawing attention from everyone all over the world.
Why is Chingay celebrated in Singapore?
Chingay was celebrated in Singapore in 1973. It was introduced by former Prime Minister, Mr Lee Kuan Yew, as a replacement for a different kind of ‘festive spirit driver’ after the banning of firecrackers, in which two people were killed during the lunar New Year festival held in 1972. After the success of the celebrations of Chingay throughout the years, it was then held stationed at Orchard Road in 1985 as a permanent venue.
Why is Chingay important to Singapore?
Chingay is one way in which the Singaporeans preserve the tradition of the Chinese New Year festival, as well as the unique culture and rich multicultural diversity of in Singapore’s society. Through Chingay, the culture and art talents of Singapore will be showcased, adding an exotic flavour to the whole festival. Furthermore, with the involvement of foreign talents in this festival, international relationships are also built.

Chinese New Year, which is also known as Spring Festival, is one of the most anticipated celebrations among the Chinese. It begins on the first day of the first month and ends on 15 January, according to the Chinese Lunar calendar.
A few weeks before Chinese New Year, families start buying new clothes and Chinese New Year goodies such as pineapple tarts and love letters. They would also decorate their houses with red colour paper-cuts and couplets usually with more popular themes of “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”.
Chinese New Year Eve, which is also known as Chúxī in Mandarin, is the day where families gather together to have a sumptuous reunion dinner at the home of the eldest family member. Fish and chicken will always be served as they are identified as prosperous dishes by the Chinese. After a sumptuous dinner, some families head down to Chinatown to experience the festival with the crowd.
During the next 3 days of Chinese New Year, everyone would celebrate the beginning of spring in buoyant spirits. Visiting the home of relatives and friends would be the main activity throughout the 3 days as a form of celebration. This is when the host of each house will serve yummy New Year goodies accompanied with drinks. "Hong Baos", also known as Red Packets, are given as a form of good luck from married couples to non-married ones including children.
Eating Yu Sheng (Raw Fish Salad) during Chinese New Year is also another traditional practice.
